Game Design Case Study 2: Game Selection Info

For this next series of game studies, I want you all to look at some more contemporary “smaller studio” games. Like before, I want you to consider the level/visual design, the sound, the story, the art direction, the character animation, and all other aspects of the game. Each game below will have TWO slots for people to pick (2×8 games should cover everyone in the class). As like our previous session, these selections are based on first-come-first-serve so make sure to send me your first AND second choice. I’ll update the list as slots are filled and get back to you as quickly as I can.

OK, without further ado: here’s the list!

After playing the game for a minimum of 30 minuets, write a minimum of 300 word response to the game and all of it’s interesting, troubling, exciting, inspirational, and other aspects that you wish to discuss. Bring this response to class printed for discussion. All of these games cost some money, but most—if not all—of that goes DIRECTLY to the developers so please consider supporting them. If you have any questions about purchasing these games or this assignment in general please let me know via email.

Have fun!

Midterm Guidelines

Create a Twine Game with over 40 passages and 5 separate “end states.” Also include 5 images using Aesprite that illustrate either a passage of time or a transition to another space. These images should be at least 128×128.

This game should be a continuation of your initial Twine Game that we created a couple of weeks ago, but can now start to incorporate fictional elements to your story. That being said no fantasy violence or Sci-Fi horror tropes can be included in these new fictional elements. Consider how to expand your initial story with creative passages that illuminates aspects of your existing narrative.

The completion of your project must be built and ready to plan on my machine upon presentation so please make sure that you have bundled all your images correctly before handing it in.

Once you’ve selected and played your game, write a 300 word (minimum) analysis of the game play, art style, storyline, character development, music, and any other aspects of the game that caught your attention. These can either be favorable views or strong criticisms, but they should be carefully and clearly articulated. Bring these reviews to class, typed and printed to turn in.
