Working on Western Ave

Western Ave Map

Above is a mind map I’ve been making in Freemind an open source mind mapping software built in with java. It’s fairly good, but I’m finding that I can’t really get a good idea of my whole map at once, probably because I’m viewing it on my little EeePC, but also cause I think the map is vertically sprawling. I took this little slice though case I think it reflects some of the more central concerns about the project. I’m finding that it’s relatively easy to go nuts in an environment like this. What I mean is that there are certainly things in this maps that are not really in direct association to my central interests in this piece. However, it helps nonetheless. I am thinking that I might use this tool for developing lesson plans for the spring. I’m hesitant though cause I don’t want students to feel they’re not getting all they could from the class because they don’t have the software to view notes (although it’s easy to download, I can already hear students using this excuse). I digress.

This being said, I’ve been making some sketches in preparation for submitting to Vague Terrain 13 in the upcoming week. I had some great difficulty making screen-grabs of googlemaps going on a tour of a suggested route, but was able to trouble-shoot it enough to get through my grief. I’ll be posting more material once I’ve edited that together and solidified my thoughts in this mind map.

Just had a good convo Lori Felker about these machinima sketches and how they could come together, and she thought that sound and image are going to be a big part of this. She also was questioning how this and other similar strings could come together to form a kind of narrative, and what that narrative space would contain/hold. These questions are bouncing around in my head, along with thinking about how literature could also inform this project has been something that has been shifting in the back of my headspace.
